The Southwest German Society was founded to coordinate events that
celebrate German Culture, Traditions and Heritage and to promote educational programs,
cultural exchange and the studies of the German language in Fountain Hills and throughout
the greater Phoenix area.
Oktoberfest – The Southwest German Society will participate in
the coordination of the Fountain Hills Oktoberfest, a tradition that began in 1998. The
Fountain Hills Oktoberfest is a family event that involves local talents and German
entertainers for this cultural exchange that is celebrated through music,
“Gemütlichkeit” and traditional foods and spirits. The Oktoberfest was first
celebrated in Munich, Germany in 1810 and has been celebrated continuously since then,
with only a few missed events because of wars. Oktoberfest is also the single most
celebrated event throughout the world. The Fountain Hills Oktoberfest is supported by
many of the German Clubs throughout the valley and provides an opportunity for these
Clubs to celebrate and work together in their communities.
Karneval, Fasching or Mardi Gras – The Southwest German
Society coordinates a Karneval celebration each year beginning in 2001. The event is a
costume ball celebrated in the German Tradition with entertainment and prizes for the
best and most creative costumes. Each year, more than twenty German Clubs from across
the United States, Canada and Germany meet in Las Vegas to celebrate German Karneval
together. The first reference to Karneval dates back to 1400 in Cologne, Germany and
today celebrations take place throughout Germany. The tradition is also very popular
internationally with Carnival in Rio, Brazil, also Carnevale in Venice, Italy as well
as Mardi Gras in the New Orleans, Louisiana and other cities in the US.
Sister Cities – The Southwest German Society is currently
discussing with German community leaders in Dierdorf, Germany to explore the opportunity
of twinning with Fountain Hills. This effort will be coordinated with the guidance of the
Fountain Hills Sister City organization that has successfully partnered with Kasterlee,
Belgium located within three hours driving time of Dierdorf.
The Southwest German Society is a non-profit organization with a
501 (c ) (3) status. Proceeds from community events support the development, growth and
enrichment of today's youth and tomorrow's leaders of our society.
