This began in the 12th century in Europe. When thearmy soldiers were mustered out of the King or princes service. Because of their skill in arms they banded together into small groups in each city and state and were there to protect their homes and families. Later, when standing armies were professional, the “Schuetzen” became more of sporting societies but could be considered a militia and could be called back to service for the crown. Today there are two elements. First is the hunting tradition under St. Hubertus. The second is the historical societies under St. Sebastian and hold to the old Germanic Traditions. |
